Promoting Healthy Living With the Seafood Nutrition Partnership

Why a nonprofit is trying to change the way we view seafood

What’s rich in omega-3s, good for the environment, and a key to achieving food security? If you answered seafood, you’re right. And while some people know that consuming fish and shellfish is an important part of a balanced diet, one organization has made it their mission to raise awareness and get more families adding seafood options to their plates.

Founded in 2013, the Seafood Nutrition Partnership (SNP) collaborates with small fishers and large organizations to raise awareness about the many essential benefits seafood provides. The hope is if people realize how healthy and accessible seafood is, they’ll eat more of it.

While the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends at least eight ounces of seafood per week for adults, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that only 20 percent of adults are meeting those guidelines. To address this deficit, the SNP has united with Rich Products and a growing list of other companies in an ongoing effort to increase sustainable seafood consumption in the United States.

“We have a unique window of opportunity to come together as an industry to help consumers solidify their new habits of including more seafood into their daily meals”

“We have a unique window of opportunity to come together as an industry to help consumers solidify their new habits of including more seafood into their daily meals,” said Jim Motos, senior vice president of the consumer brands division of Rich Products and chair of SNP’s board of directors.

This opportunity comes at a crucial time. Many types of seafood are packed with the essential vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats needed to support heart health, brain function, and a strong immune system—key considerations as societies around the world grapple with increasing levels of persistent health problems.

What’s more, boosting seafood consumption can play a central role in achieving the sustainability goals developed by the United Nations, but to do so requires raising awareness on the health and environmental benefits. By partnering with public and private sector organizations like Rich’s, SNP has a larger platform to more effectively spread that message

“Rich Family Foundation is proud to support SNP’s Eat Seafood, America! campaign for its focus on sustainability and improving the health of Americans,” said Motos about the collaboration.

Now with a 10-year awareness campaign underway and the assistance of their partners and fishers, SNP is primed to make an impact, helping boost seafood consumption and sustainability efforts in the U.S.
